Yarn Along ~ Needles, hooks, yarn, and books

Joining Ginny for a yarn along today.

The upside to two long airplane flights? Needles, hooks, yarn and books, of course :)!!  By the way, how is it that I can get my pair of sharp, pointy 10" needles through security, but not my shampoo??

I love my colorful washcloths. Never in my life did I think I could love washcloths the way I do these. I don't even want to use them.  I need to make them uglier and less colorful I guess.  The crocheted afghan is still slow going but I am loving how the little flowers are turning out!

On the book front, I finished Friday Night Knitting Club.  In two words -- big sigh.  I wouldn't say I wasted my time as it did have elements that I enjoyed-- like the bonds between women and, of course, the knitting. But I do believe it could have ended much better :).

What I am reading now, I am thoroughly enjoying.  Bird by Bird by Ann Lamott.  She grasped my attention from the start. Her style and her brutally honest truths about writing spoke to me with revealing clarity.  If you love to write and want to get better, I definitely recommend this book :).  I am also reading the Woman in White by Wilkie Collins, a lovely Victorian mystery and classic from the latter 1800's.  I'm loving this so far, too, and will give it a proper review when I am finished :).

Happy yarn along, looking forward to yours!!

  1. I was wondering about that - if they'd let me bring my knitting/crocheting on the plane...lol - the shampoo comment made me laugh! :D

yeah - I never really understood how could someone knit some really nice washcloth and then use it? :D I've never made one, but if I did, I would just leave it as a decoration I guess :D
keep crocheting -the flowers are beautiful! :)

  2. Ok MJ, I'll let you know about my book and you have to let me know about yours.
My son was floored when we looked at the restrictions for planes when he was flying to
Canada; none of it makes any sense!
    I love knit washcloths!

  3. I am loving your crochet. I have seen the book, Women In White and had it on my 'to read' list, but just haven't gotten to it yet, sigh, like so many books. Jacinta

  6. Those washcloths are gorgeous, and I'm intrigued by your description of Bird by Bird. I may have to look into that one a bit more. It really is rather crazy that you can fly with knitting needles while so many other things are a huge no-no, but I'm glad you were able to knit all the same!

  7. how true about the airport security... I had a ridiculous run-in with security once, trying to bring ice packs in a diaper bag to keep some breast milk chilled on a loooooonggg flight. I took those ice packs in and out of the states and then got chastised for them on the shortest jump from Vancouver to Edmonton. oh my.
Also, that book sounds exactly up my alley and I LOVE the color of those flowers coming together!

  12. I have always thought that. Once when I went to the court house I brought in my knitting needles. I was afraid I would be searched, but it didnt even set the alarm off. I must have packed bamboo just in case. But seriously Id rather I have my needles that toothpaste anyhow. Even though it is silly.

  18. I am loving washcloths. They're so great to stuff into my purse and finish in the extra moments about town. Your bright colored cloths inspire me to branch away from the solids i've somehow gotten hooked on.

  19. Well, I didn't want to ruin the book for you, but I did tell you to keep some tissue handy! I was so upset when I finished Friday Night Knitting Club. Wasn't expecting the ending! Here is my contribution http://lifesbestdays.blogspot.com/2011/06/yarn-along-feeding-mind-and-soul.html

  20. I made myself a few washcloths to help me learn to knit and purl. I actually use them and love them. I bought organic cotton in bold bright colors. I might take a break from what I am working on and make a few more to give as a gift with a really yummy bottle of dish soap...... Your picture inspired me today. Thank you!

  23. Love your crochet squares there!

Yeah...my feelings about FNKC where the exact same. It was an OK book but could have been a bit better.

  25. Bird by Bird is the best book about writing. Do read her others - Anne Lamott has a sharp wit and is painfully honest. A wonderful writer.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm going to do a little poking around yours!
