Sacred Space

Truthfully, I don't have one, or at least not one specific space where I would describe as a place of my very own--one place where I can escape to, to read, write, meditate, relax, or rejuvenate. They eventually find me you see. And those of you with children around 24/7 understand. I know this shouldn't be an excuse, but for me a sacred space would be somewhere I could completely shut myself off into absolute silence and from any interruption... and well, I just can't do that, not physically anyway.

So when this week's 52 photo projects prompt came up, I admit my mind went into dreamy thinking. How I wish I could claim that it looked like this:

Love Joseph Campbell's quote:

"Your sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again."

So for now, my sacred space floats from room to room, and especially outside, following the moments of silence and peace where I am not mama or wife, just me. Yesterday it was here....

I would love to read about-- or even see your sacred spaces!!

  2. I love the ceiling in your second picture. I am very lucky since son #2 got married I now have his room for my studio. The guy's here thought it was going to be a weight room....ha, silly men! I do understand about needing the silence. I still wake at 5 a.m. so I can have mine!xx

  3. It's an incredible sense they have for finding us, wouldn't you say? : )

All lovely spaces, but none as cosy as your own.

  4. I have favorite corners in every room of my house - but I also have never been able to fully, physically get away... and four years into motherhood I am okay with that. For now!
I love your cozy little nook. Even better than the other two spaces!

  6. Beautiful spaces, MJ. Even if you're just borrowing them, it still counts. :) It's hard with little ones, but it makes those quiet moments so much sweeter.

  9. Wow! I love reading your thoughts on this subject and your dilemna. And I like that you decided "Today it is here...". The first two photos had me dreaming big time. Oh, yeah.

  10. Awesome photos ~ I do understand about having children (I used to go in the bathroom for alone time ~ LOL ~ however brief) ~ Campbell quote says it all ~ Yet for photos I would say your first photo looks to me like an enchanted, sacred space ~ thanks ~namaste, Carol (A Creative Harbor)

  11. My sacred space is often in my room, on my bed, curtains closed, no one talking to me, book in hand. Ahhhhh

  12. Yes, getting away from the little ones can be difficult. No more children at home, but the four-legged kind seem to find me no matter where I go. :)

  13. I thank you for your comment on my blog and agree you should move out here where there is both sea and forest. Depends on which weather front you prefer. No hurricanes. Plenty of rain but it's more like a constant drizzle. Right now, we're experiencing a very hot summer (76 degrees).

  15. I don't have a dedicated sacred space, either. Mostly I get up earlier than my family for peace and quiet, or I retire to my room to lounge and read if need be. But there are ALWAYS interruptions (ah well).

  16. A comfy throw blanket, good book in hands, natural light from your window... looks like a lovely little getaway and quiet place.

  17. Your chaise looks sooo cozy!!!

I do have a room that's designated as my creative room - for drawing, sewing, and such - but the kids usually show up after 5 minutes. I don't want to complain, though. I'm sure it won't be long before they start rolling their eyes at spending time with mom.

  18. Oh that second photo!
Given Joseph Campbell's quote, my sacred space is our kitchen and our yard.

  19. LOVE those windows in that first one.

i think that for a mama, anywhere quiet and alone for 10mins is sacred. lol

  20. I love that-your sacred space travels with you. I am having the same kind of issues here. Those kids can sniff you out in a hurry!

  21. A beautiful sacred space. It is always with you! :)

  22. Oh I remember those days so well! When I needed some "quiet" time, I'd take a time out in the powder room (but it usually ended with someone banging on the door). I'd wake up early just for some time alone. It gets better and easier as they grow.

  23. I love that quote. Like you, my sacred place moves around with me. The porch swing in the early morning in the summer. In front of the wood stove with tea or coffee in the winter. The deck in the evening with a glass of wine and hubby. Anyplace with a book in my hand at snatched minutes during the day. I have an entire sewing/crafting room. But it is always cluttered, with various half-finished projects, glue, fabric, paper, pointy pins everywhere. I can't relax in chaos, and so don't get in there very often, unless I clean first, and isn't cleaning the opposite of sacred? So yes, I slice it out where ever, whenever I can. I have never thought about it before now, but you are totally right.
    Cheers

  25. i love that first space! wow - round windows.

my space is in my bed, with my full size book shelf right next to me, a lamp, and something to drink of the night stand. i can roll over and look at the hall to the kids' rooms and up at my high ceiling and moon window.

  26. love this post. we need to improvise when we don't have the actual space.

  27. the spaces all look really comfy + inviting! i don't have a personal space {usually i'll head to loo + just shut the door to get a few quiet moments- but as all mom's know, that only works for a few! ;) } i'm inspired to carve out a corner with all those gorgeous photos!
