Yarn Along 10.26.11 {same but different}

I am joining Ginny today for Yarn Along, and thought I'd show you what I've been fiddling with lately.

I have three photos, pretty much of the same things--the knitted hat using leftover Honey colored Puffin yarn from Quince and Co. and Soule Mama's favorite hat pattern, and Ahab's Wife which I'm aaaalmost done reading (good but definitely drags here and there, and the excessive symbolism is beginning to drive me mad, like a lot of characters in this book).

The difference in the photos is that the first is a real polaroid pic, the second is a polaroid pic app., and the last is from my digital camera. It's just curiousity really, and I wanted to see and feel the difference in emotions evoked between the photos. What do you think?

It's all fun, and it's nice to know there are several apps you can use to play around with the feel of your smart phone photos...In the end, though I love the vintage feel of a real polaroid, the digital cameras are the most honest. That is, until we start playing with the editing, which I didn't in this one, I swear...

Happy Wednesday and Yarn Along :)

  1. the quality of the polaroid is unique. i think we can simulate it very well but it takes more than just applying an app. the grain for starters. and then the 'imperfections', difficult to recreate realistically.

both our current books are going slowly. :)

  2. You can definitely tell the real polaroid photo it has more depth and the color is more saturated. I like your knitting too!!

  5. Oh I love how you shared this comparison...the real Polaroid can't be beat for the emotional quality!

I just gave myself permission to stop reading a book that I couldn't get hooked into, despite liking the author. Several chapters in I simply returned it to the library. Phew.

  6. Isn't photography fun! So many things you can do with the same image. I haven't read Ahab's Wife and probably won't (!!!)... back to crochet!

  7. What a lovely hat pattern! I'm going to have to bookmark that and see if I have some yarn to make one.

  8. I like the real polaroid pic the best. You took that one outside in shade? The other two inside in bright sunlight?

  9. I like the polaroid the best, maybe it's because I remember staying by my Dad when he would use a polaroid camera waiting on the film to develop! Love the hat too!

  11. yes, definitely prefer the real deal but i don't prefer the price tag of the film ;-) guess that is why my polaroid sits prettily on a shelf most of the time!

  12. I like the real polaroid. I'm a little tired of all the apps, and your two pics next to each other confirm again that while it looks nice, it doesn't come close the real thing.

  13. Great experiment. The first is definitely my favourite - it really does look more genuine. It evokes a whole different feeling for me, love it. Beautiful green, too. :)

  15. i love polaroids, but a vintage camera and film as much or more. and it's a bit more affordable. love your comparisons and love your hat the most.

  16. I was going to comment that the "true" polaroid picture is my favorite over the app one. Of course the colors are brilliant from the digital camera, but you'd expect nothing less from a high tech device!

The app photo is trying too hard. It wants to be cool like the original, but it doesn't quite "get it".

  17. Ya just can't go wrong with the real thing. Thanks for posting the two images. Too bad the polaroid film is so spendy -- I sure love the look and the whole experience and so do my girls.
