daybook

I have a cold. Inevitable I guess having two sick kids in the house for a week. I should be in bed right now, or unpacking if I had a smidge more energy, but I want to sit here instead and share a daybook with you. Simplicity is best when there isn't much room for anything else, yes?

Today, outside my window...
I see fat squirrels chasing each other up and around the tree. Oh how I might like being a fat squirrel for just an hour or so...

I am thinking...
about the family at school that just lost their husband and father yesterday. I barely know them, but it still hurts. I have a card to mail them today, it just doesn't feel like it's enough.

I am thankful...
for hot tea with lemon and agave nectar.

In the kitchen...
I have blueberry muffins waiting to be baked with M. after school. I love baking with her...

I am wearing...
jeans and my favorite fuzzy grey sweater, with flip flops.

I am creating...
my sacred space around this desk of mine. There is art to frame and nails to break into this wall.

I am going...
to crawl up on the couch with  my tea after this post, and allow myself to not think for awhile.

I am wondering...how the kids are doing at school. I miss them...

I am reading...
Wildwood  by Colin Meloy, but wishing I had more energy to dive into Drawing Lab by Carla Sonheim, it looks wonderful.

I am hoping...
for a nap today, even though I haven't had one in years.

I am looking forward to...sleeping.

I am learning...
that I love having Hubs work at home, but it is strange, too, as I have had pangs like he is encroaching on my "domain". Like when he closes things that I want open, or moves things that I don't want moved. It's silly really, but also very interesting to examine how we get set in our ways, and how important it is to get un-set :).

Around the house...
the new plants that I brought home yesterday have made such a beautiful difference in our surroundings. I can't live in a home without plants...

I am pondering...what tea to brew next.

A favorite quote for today...
"I do believe in simplicity. It is astonishing as well as sad, how many trivial affairs even the wisest thinks he must attend to in a day; how singular an affair he thinks he must omit. When the mathematician would solve a difficult problem, he first frees the equation of all incumbrances, and reduces it to its simplest terms. So simplify the problem of life, distinguish the necessary and the real. Probe the earth to see where your main roots run. "
~Henry David Thoreau

One of my favorite things...
the feel of books with trimmed pages...

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Feeling better, sleeping better, dog walking and cat loving at the shelter, more organizing after only 5 boxes left :), a hike or two, de-weeding the garden, maybe actually planting something yummy, hugging on my children when I see them next.

A peek into my day...

Happy May to you :)

  2. I hope you'll be able to get some rest, best for a cold...I like my tea with milk and honey...
Feel better soon...Having a husband home requires adjustment on both partners...respect each other's space and don't sweat the small stuff is the best advice I can give.

  3. Hope you had a lovely cup of tea, were able to rest and your cold is a thing of the past!
Plants are a must for a Home I think too!
Mike works from home quite often and it does take getting use to; if it gets to be too much I send him outside to do something.

  4. I have a hubby who works from home, too. Boy, did it take some getting used to! The little annoyances will happen - learn to look at them and let them go. Now I really miss him when he needs to visit a client (and really enjoy the silence at the same time).

  7. hrmph, darn colds, they sure know exactly how to make us slow down when we think we least want to. ;)

i'll be interested on your thoughts on wildwood, i have no idea if it's my sort of thing, but the illustrations are sublime.

nurture yourself, more reading, more tea....

  9. My hubby is disabled and now home all the time. It does take adjusting when we are both home. One main difference I find is that he wants to eat right on schedule whereas I get involved in things and would rather eat when I notice I'm hungry!

Blueberry muffins and tea - I could go for that!

    Hope you feel better soon.

  11. I hope you feel better soon. That tea and a nap will really hit the spot.

I miss my kids when they aren't around too. But I understand what you mean about having someone encroach on your area - I like having things the way I'm accustomed.

God bless, have a wonderful week!

  12. You have captured your day so beautifully, MJ. I can feel the quiet around you and the nap calling, and the warm mug, and your wandering thoughts. We have that book here, and now I think I'll read it, in my own quiet moment, somewhere, sometime. I can feel how you miss your kids too, but I also feel your acceptance, and your openness to what this new journey might bring. Ah, MJ. How lovely that your words make me feel so much! Thank you.

  14. I too bought a whole bunch of new plants yesterday in the hope of recreating some of the magic from a recent visit to Eden Project and weirdly enough I literally just drank a cup of lemon tea with agave too. The synchronicity me smile :-) Hope your Juno mags arrived ok - sorry about the naff packaging!!! X

  15. Thanks for sharing...what a wonderful day, sorry you are down a bit with a cold. I'm sure the hubs at home is a mixed blessing:) I fantasize about it regularly, but laugh as I read your comments and think I would feel much the same. Hope you got a nap in MJ.

  17. I do hope you get to feeling better. I can't believe that top picture. My, you've picked a wonderful spot to call home. I, too, covet the deckle edge. Cool site, thanks for the link. I know just what you mean about the hubs -- it's like I have to stop at the urge to micro manage -- not that cutting board, hey that goes over there, hey I need to stand there. Sharing space is intimate stuff...

  18. Beautiful daybook, I have Wildwood on our list to read. I know what you mean about the space thing too. Hope you are feeling better soon. A cold is kicking my hind parts as I type. Enjoy many cups of tea and rest.

  19. Being under the weather has it's perks I suppose; tea, muffins, curled up on the couch, reading, not thinking....yes, I like all these things. It's too bad we have to get sick sometimes to give ourselves permission to relax. But I do hope you're feeling much better soon!

p.s. I love my husband so very much but boy does he annoy me when he's too in my space. ;-D

  20. so glad you shared this... it lead me over to the link you gave, and now i would gladly participate. i like to do things like this now and then. it gives me an avenue to say things without me having to come up with what to write about. some days, i need that. this is one of those days.

that said, i love your filled in blanks... especially that thoreau quote. and as always... the photos. hope you are feeling better by now. my son and i were sick last week. it was a very unfun way to spend our first week back from vacay. but we are better now. be better too. ~xo
