Joining Ginny over at Small Things for Yarn Along:
"~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? ... ~"

Not much has changed since last week, other than my growing "boyfriend hat" and my mounting obsession with growing our own food.  I am still reading through Reader's Digest Back to Basics, savoring graciously all the wonderful how-to's it shares.  Timely, though unplanned, I also started listening to Barbara Kingsolver's Animal Vegetable Miracle this week.  What a wonderful yet tormenting education I am getting on our current food and farming culture.  This book does inspire and give me hope :).  Delightfully, I have also found her Vegetannual on her website.

It's such a great reminder that there is a time and a place for everything, that every plant is a miracle, and that there is purpose to when everything blooms and flourishes (not unlike our soul-full selves).  I can personally attest to how removed from this I had become as a suburban, city girl with our convenient grocery stores (this, too, is changing--more on that later).  Change is such a good thing, a natural thing, as spring reminds me every year...

Happy yarning, reading, and garden planning everyone!!

We all do our best to grow...

Despite all the challenges, we all do our best to grow, even broccoli :).  Nature has a way of surviving no matter the obstacles. Sometimes it has to be enough just to survive. But, when we have enough to survive, do we give enough to help them thrive?

We all need a little something, a little more water here, a little more sunlight there, but without love and attention, just surviving loses luster and meaning. The message is everywhere if we want to see it.  A little more love, please? When I look at a tiny little life, yes, even broccoli, I understand. We all need a little more love. There is no such thing as too much.

"What we have to learn to do, we learn by doing." ~ Aristotle

It's going to be 84 degrees here in central FL today. And though I am not really enjoying the heat, I must say that as a budding gardener, I will count my lucky stars.

Unschooling has really given us the freedom and opportunity to just do. Inhibitions, doubts, fears, insecurities, even procedure-- they take a backseat to interest, possibility, and excitement for exploring the unknown. When all things you never thought you could or would do, become possible, then that's when life gets really interesting!!

So, we have been wanting a veggie garden for awhile and FL soil, well, let's just say it doesn't fall into any category labeled "soil" at all.  Fortunately, will a little help from Mel Bartholmew we just dove into veggie and herb production.  Hubs made an awesome above ground cedar frame which still needs some tweaking, so we just started planting in containers for now. We mixed our own soil and happily wore the true trademarks of gardening--dirt and manure imbedded in our clothes, hands and nails. The smell of good, clean dirt is wonderful...

What's next?  Worms!!
